Watch: ‘The Golden Girls’ Returns, But Animated

‘The Golden Girls 3033’ uses the original script but with new, animated visuals – and it’s all a sci-fi!

The campaign for the return of The Golden Girls has begun – and it’s more surprising than ever! Creator Mike Hollingsworth has shared with IndieWire a 5 minute pilot of The Golden Girls in an animated form and explained the concept.

He uses the original scripts and audio as a starting point but adds plenty of visual gags and humor. Blanche (Rue McClanahan), Dorothy (Bea Arthur), Rose (Betty White), and Sophia (Estelle Getty) all still live in Miami, but having discovered the fountain of youth, it’s now the year 3033.

“It’s ultimately a celebration of the material,” Hollingsworth explained. “With this concept, you’re getting the original performances. These are the words that Susan Harris wrote, and these are the performances that she oversaw as a director.”

Hollingsworth, who worked on animated shows like BoJack Horseman and Inside Job says his new initiative has already had interest from networks, but (obviously) the legal side of it has to be solved.

“My representatives and I started poking around Disney, asking, ‘How do we make this?’ The concept was so obtuse: ‘Golden Girls,’ fountain of youth, the future. We were just having trouble getting past those lawyer gatekeepers.”

Also importantly, Hollingsworth is well aware of the sitcom’s significance to the gay community. With that in mind he asked his brother Bryan to work with him on character design, and Hollingsworth hopes to put more LGBTQ voices “in the driver’s seat” if “Golden Girls 3033” indeed going to be aired.
