“We will never take for granted the platform we’ve been given to tell authentic queer stories”
RuPaul posted a public statement on his social media shortly after the 2022 Emmy Nominations announcements on Tuesday, with RuPaul’s Drag Race nominated for 11 Emmy Awards.
“As the basic human rights of LGBTQ+ people are being threatened once again, I want to thank our peers in the Television Academy for acknowledging the achievements of the beautiful and talented souls that work in front of and behind the cameras at RuPaul’s Drag Race,” RuPaul wrote.
“Through the miracle of drag, our spectacular Season 14 queens have touched hearts and opened minds around the planet. We will never take for granted the platform we’ve been given to tell authentic queer stories, and pledge to do everything in our power to continue to spread light, love, and laughter.”
Rupaul’s Drag Race has so far 56 Emmy nominations and 24 wins. Rupaul himself has been collecting the Emmys for Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Competition Program consecutively since 2016.
RuPaul’s hinted political comment comes as a surprise since Ru has a history of keeping a low profile in times when political turmoil took over the news – but this seems to be changing with this comment that obviously referring the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the threat that gay marriage could be next on the list of human rights being taken away. Last month, Ru used his time on The Late Late Show With James Corden to call out conservative politicians trying to ban kids from attending drag shows.
With the Emmy Awards coming up on September 12, RuPaul’s Drag Race Emmy nominations include Outstanding Production Design For A Variety, Reality Or Competition Series, Outstanding Cinematography For A Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing, Outstanding Host, Outstanding Competition Program, Outstanding Sound Mixing, Outstanding Casting For A Reality Program and Outstanding Directing For A Reality Program.
