Kylie and Jason Neighbours Finale

The iconic soap couple is returning to Ramsey Street over three decades after they left.

Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan will return to Australian soap opera Neighbours for its finale after an absence of more than 30 years. Here’s all that we know so far

Latest Update

Kylie has revealed to The Australian she was eager to drive down memory lane as she filmed scenes with her ex-boyfriend Jason Donovan for the final episode of Neighbours. “I wanted to be reminded of being that 19-year-old again, when I would get into my Datsun and fang it to Vermont South or the Network Ten studios at Nunawading, [in Melbourne where the show is filmed],” she told the newspaper. “It was very sweet to be with Jason and to think, ‘Wow, we’re still around’.”

Confirmation

Neighbours’ creators announced Kylie and Jason’s return on Sunday (May 1). “We are thrilled that Jason and Kylie have come home to play a very special part in our series finale,” the soap’s executive producer Jason Herbison said on Twitter. “Scott and Charlene are the ultimate Neighbours couple and it would not feel right to end the show without them.”

Shortly after, Minogue teased her involvement in the Neighbours finale, sharing a close-up photo of a script to her Instagram account. The details visible show that the scene is set outside, and features both Scott and Charlene.

Neighbours boss Jason Herbison revealed how effortless it was to get the couple on the show. “Both Kylie and Jason needed very little persuading at all,” he told Inside Soap. “They both appreciate the show and the special role that it has played in their careers. It’s a lovely show of respect to Neighbours, and I was thrilled when they said yes. It didn’t feel right to end the show without them.”

Timing

In March came the announcement that Neighbours will cease production in June after nearly 37 years on small screens. The 8,903 episode of the soap opera will be its final and will be aired in Australia on Monday, August 1.

Script

A leaked script obtained by PopSugar may well be a “decoy”, the outlet reported Charlene and Scott “bring the curtain down” on the series, pulling up to Ramsay Street in a car and stepping out with the line: “We’re home.”

Besides Kylie and Jason, Neighbours Finale is promised to be an ending that will have something for everyone spanning all generations of viewers. Among the returning characters are Harold Bishop (who ends up being Kylie’s stepfather on the show, played by Ian Smith), Shane Ramsay (Peter O’Brien), Des Clarke (Paul Keane) and Joel Samuels (Daniel MacPherson)

“It’s an absolute pleasure to be back,” said Ian Smith. “I’m the biggest sook under the sun. I’m going to be shocking on the last night that Neighbours airs. It really will be an end of an era and I am so proud to have been a part of it.”
