Lil Nas X’s song was nominated for Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year and Best Music Video at the 2022 Grammy Awards. The gay rapper also received a Grammy nod for Album of the Year with his latest album Montero and Best Melodic Rap Performance, the latter for his song “Industry Baby.” The categories for Song and Record of the Year are widely considered the highest honors of the evening.
Lil Nas X took to Twitter to express his gratitude. “don’t have to win a single award, truly thankful for all the insight this year has brought me. and thankful for the journey. love u guys,” the rapper tweeted.
The raunchy lyrics of the song go: “I wanna sell what you’re buying, I wanna feel on yo’ ass in Hawaii, I want that jet lag from f***ing and flying, Shoot a child in your mouth while I’m riding”
“Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” derives its name from the 2018 film Call Me By Your Name about a gay romance. Both the music video and Lil Nas X’s spirited performance on SNL attracted wide praise and criticism for their overt homoeroticism.
Fellow rappers DaBaby and Boosie Badazz both attacked Lil Nas X on social media and in interviews, claiming that the song would make children grow up gay. Lil Nas X has responded to the criticism by releasing an even more erotic video for “Industry Baby” which features him and his dancers naked, and posing for a photospread in which he appeared pregnant.
Lil Nas X is very outspoken about his sexuality. After being named one of GQ Magazine’s men of the year, the rapper opened up about hooking up, admitting it’s a bit difficult in his position, and that Grindr is a big no-no – but Twitter is not out of the question.
“can’t do [Grindr] anymore,” he told the magazine. “I’d literally probably get murdered.”
Lil Nas X said his Twitter DMs are “all out of order,” he said it’s “lucky, because I do get horny and I’m like, ‘Let’s see who’s the hottest person in this thing.’ But you know, luckily I don’t really do that. I only did that once, maybe.”
